Artichokes and ale

Just enjoyed a wonderful couple of pints of West Country bitter Otter, poured straight from the barrel (always my favourite way of serving beer) at the magnificently atmospheric Artichoke Inn in the pretty Devon village of Christow, where I was enjoying the hospitality of chums Graham and Sue Paterson.
The Artichoke dates back at least 600 years and given that the inn sign is a crusader, probably gets its name from the Jerusalem artichokes (starch tuber root vegetables) brought back from the Middle East in the 12th century. The put has a superb exterior with rustic thatch and a courtyard that feels in the middle of a waterfall due to the spring gushing down from Dartmoor and passing underneath it. A great rural English pub experience. Much recommended.
