Never really understood the Muslim festival of Eid until this year, when it came home to me with a bang, like the sound of a train crash: my friend Mo falling off the Ramadan bandwagon. Although Muslim he was brought up in Europe and so likes a drink now and then. But in deference to his cultural roots, he observes Ramadan 'religiously'. But when it's over, boy does he know how to party.
It almost made me wish Christians - or those of us who pay lip-service to Christian cultural concepts - observed Lent more thoroughly. If only for the fun of getting hammered afterwards.
I understand that a lot of Muslims don't drink at all - but also that there are a lot who pretend not to but do secretly. I have no agenda either way, but I was encouraged to see how in the right circumstances a Muslim tradition could be observed without going to extremes.
