Nice to see the Guardian catching up with what has been happening in the British beer market over the past few years: the decline of fizzy bland keg and the rediscovery of our native beer style, both in traditional varieties and in new adaptations.
Jon Henley's piece featured on the cover of today's G2 not only celebrates the growth of new microbreweries all over the country, but focuses on the often neglected independent family brewers who have kept traditional British ale alive. Henley's sensibly points out that beer is 'indisputable Britain's national drink.'
He sings the praises of Hertfordshire family brewers McMullens, who not only fought off recalcitrant family members, the depredations of the property market and the Inland Revenue to stay in business but maintain a flagship London pub in The Spice of Life on Cambridge Circus in the heart of the West End.
Henley also sings the praises of bottle conditioned ales praising "fast-growing demand for beers that would scare the pants off a Lagerboy".
Hear, hear! More beer!
